Product Evolution: Baby BedsTips for graduating from bassinet to crib to big-kid bed |
![]() |
A newborn will snooze just about anywhere, but at some point you'll probably want her sleeping in a crib. For this second entry in our "Product Evolution" series, we got some expert advice on how and when to change your baby's sleeping environment—plus product picks for each stage.
Start cozy. "Newborns like a snug feeling while they are sleeping," says Janet Kennedy, Ph.D. (a.k.a. the NYC Sleep Doctor). "The best way to accomplish that is with a tight swaddle. Most people use a bassinet, moses basket, or co-sleeper at first." But "some children sleep exclusively in their crib from day one, and that’s just fine," adds Conner Herman, co-founder of Dream Team Baby. The baby should transition to the crib (start with naps) once she is un-swaddled, rolling over, too big for the bassinet, or when the parents are ready to move the baby out of their bedroom. Magic Beans founder and baby-gear guru Sheri Gurock recommends the Arms Reach co-sleeper, the Monte Ninna Nanna Bassinet, and the Stokke Sleepi System 1, in bassinet mode.
Lower the mattress. "It's important to lower the crib mattress before it seems necessary," warns Kennedy, "because you don't want to learn the hard way that you have an escape artist on your hands. Once the baby can roll over, it's a good idea to move the crib down from its highest setting. Absolutely move it down mid-way once the baby is sitting. And as soon as the baby shows any interest in pulling up or standing, move the mattress down to the lowest setting." Gurock is a fan of the Stokke Sleepi and Oeuf Sparrow cribs.
To tent or not to tent. "If the child is a precocious climber, it could be worth trying a crib tent," says Kennedy. "But in general, I prefer moving the child to a bed once he can get out because the crib escape signals a developmental milestone—that the child is probably emotionally ready to be in a bed." Herman, however, recommends keeping children in the crib until around age 3, even if they're climbing out. "Until then, toddlers are impulse-driven and not generally emotionally mature enough to understand that even though there are no sides, they are not supposed to get out of bed." If you choose to use a crib tent, Herman suggests thinking about it as a temporary solution—"something you do initially for safety reasons, and then take measures to teach your child to stay in the crib." Gurock suggests trying the Tots in Mind Crib Tent.
Toddler vs. Twin. "The difference between a toddler bed and a twin is really just a matter of space," explains Kennedy. "If there's room, it's best to go straight to a twin. When children leave the crib behind, they are making a big emotional transition. A converted crib still feels like a crib in most cases. Children can get more excited about a new bed, and they will be more motivated to rise to the challenge of being a big kid (i.e., staying in bed)." Gurock's favorite twin bed is the Oeuf Sparrow.
Guard rails. "Guard rails are important for physical and emotional security, even if the mattress is on the floor," advises Kennedy. Herman agrees and adds, "Once you feel like your child has adjusted to the new sleep space, you can remove the guard rails and line the floor with pillows for a few days. If your baby's sleep habits don't change and there aren't any accidents, then you can be confident that your baby has successfully reached the finish line."

Sending your baby off to nursery school for the first time is exciting—and totally nerve-wracking. (For both of you.) Our experts and scouts share their personal-experience tips for making the adventure as happy and seamless as possible.
BEFORE YOU GO
Involve your kid in every aspect of planning. "We shopped together for my daughter's 'first day of school outfit,' picked out the backpack together online, and so on," says one NYC scout. "I think it helped for her to feel she had some control over the way the day was going to go."
Label everything. Our scouts love Mabel's Labels.
Explain to your child what a typical school day will be like, and how much fun it will be. Our Atlanta scout suggests visiting the school together if you can: meet the teachers, remember their names, and mention them often prior to the first day.
Dress him comfortably and ready for play—and expect plenty of snack and art stains.
Let her help pack the backpack—and have fun with it—recommends our Boston scout.
Pack snacks and lunches in bento-style containers suggests guest scout (and Weelicious founder) Catherine McCord, "because kids can open them and see all their choices—plus teachers love them because there aren’t tons of containers, tops, and plastic bags to keep track of." She especially likes the boxes from Laptop Lunches and PlanetBox.
Before packing peanut butter, ask whether your school is nut-free (many are), advises our Greenwich scout.
Take the first day of school pictures at home, or in front of your house or building. If you wait until you get to the school your kid might be too tearful—or too excited—to pose for a snapshot.
ON SEPARATING
For the first few drop-offs, our Seattle scout advises leaving siblings with your spouse or sitter if possible, so you can focus entirely on the school tot.
When it's time to leave, put on a happy face and leave. Don't linger. But then again, according to our child development experts at Seedlings Group, you shouldn't sneak out without saying goodbye either.
Be on time, says our Seattle scout. "It's harder for a child to come in when all the other kids are already settled."
Find out what activity the kids will be doing right before pickup, suggests our Greenwich scout. "That way you can say, 'I'll see you right after finger painting.'"
If your child is very nervous, Seedlings Group says you should acknowledge his fears while recalling times in the past when he was worried but acted brave—and remind him that those situations turned out fine. But don't ever deny or joke about his fears, or tell him to "get over it."
Several scouts also recommend reading the book The Kissing Hand with your child.

New York's most popular sports class for tots has arrived in LA. They’re offering classes all over town, so whether you live in Hermosa Beach, West Hollywood or Pacific Palisades, there’s a class nearby. Each session kicks off with a song, followed by a few warm-up games, stretching, then skill-building exercises—and yes, a chance to score some goals. Do You Like Stuff

A new service for moms who like stuff

I recently caught wind of a new free-sample service for moms. Well, "free" isn't entirely accurate—you have to pay $10 a month for Bluum's subscription-based product sampling service, which delivers a boxful of five products—some full-sized, and some "deluxe-sized" samples (bigger than a foil, but smaller than full-sized)—straight to your door, once a month. Launching in September, the service aims to deliver top baby, beauty, and wellness brands (Apothederm and Smith's Rosebud are on board for the first delivery). Bluum, which was conceived by the founders of StyleFactory, also plans to offer an online retail shop, just in case you like what you try.

How to Host a Sip & See
The "Sip & See" trend is gaining some serious momentum. Typically held 2-6 weeks after the baby arrives (open-house style with a timeframe of 3-4 hours for guests to drop by as they please), the mid-afternoon shindigs are often held in lieu of a baby shower. We love them for their efficiency: invite everyone over all at once to see the baby, so your home doesn't feel like a revolving door of visitors during those already stressful just-home-from-the-hospital weeks.
We chatted with Jennifer Sbranti, the brilliant blogger behind Hostess with the Mostess, about how to host a Sip & See with lots of style, but little stress. Of course she blew us away with her adorable suggestions. Read on for her entertaining tips and visit Hostessblog.com to see her Sip & See inspiration board.
"Sip & Sees are often themed as tea parties, but I thought it would be fun to put a little twist on this concept and share some ideas for a "Sparkling Sip & See" featuring Champagne and other bubbly things to sip! Here are a few ideas for this type of theme:
Invitations:
This charming Love Buggy invitation design from tiny prints features a Champagne-yellow hue and is and great for any Sip & See. (Gender-specific Boy and Girl versions are also available.) Avoid invitation designs featuring drawings of pregnant women since baby has already arrived!
What to Sip:
A "Sparkling Drinks & DIY Champagne Bar" is an absolute MUST for this party! Set out a variety of bubbly drinks-from Martinelli's Cider and Lorina's Sparkling Lemonade to bottles of sparkling water and Champagne. Offer a few different mixers for the Champagne such as Chambord, O.J., pomegranate juice, and pineapple juice so that guests can stir up their own favorite Champagne-based cocktail.
When it comes to Champagne there's just something about a cheap plastic cup that detracts from the experience. Whenever possible, serve guests from the real thing. Borrow glass flutes from friends, shop for inexpensive sets at places like Target and IKEA or use wine glasses that you already own instead... they'll do the trick just fine!
On the Menu:
Time your party in the middle of the afternoon so that you don't have to worry about serving a full meal. A few simple finger foods like veggie platters and artichoke dip are all that you'll need (and store-bought versions are fine!).
Instead of serving individual desserts, set up a mini dessert & candy buffet that guests can gravitate towards as they please. Choose a color palette for the buffet that matches your theme. An all yellow and white palette is perfect for a sparkling champagne-themed party!
Set small treats like mini cupcakes and tea cookies on one side of the dessert buffet and jars of pretty candies—such as rock candy sticks, chewy Champagne bubbles, Jordan almonds, and jelly bellies—on the other. Leave a stack of cellophane bags customized with Burst Monogram Personalized Labels near the candy jars so that guests can make their own candy favor bags to take home.
Party Décor:
Keep the decorations stress-free without sacrificing style! Here are a few quick & easy ideas:
• Paper lanterns are one of the easiest ways to make a big decorative impact with minimal effort! Added bonus - they're super inexpensive! Lemonade yellow lanterns and white eyelet lanterns from LunaBazaar.com are lovely choices for a Sparkling Sip & See!
• Create simple floral centerpieces that are both modern and soft. White hydrangea, dahlias, or tight bunches of fluffy carnations are all great choices!
• Fill glass cylinder vases part way with a "sparkling" filler like diamond drops or acrylic sea glass, then add water & a few simple floral stems. Embellish the vase with a band of satin ribbon, and sprinkle more of your "sparkling vase filler" on tabletops to help play up the theme!
• Use translucent colored votive holders as bud vases to hold single tulips or button mums.
Other Tips:
• Set up a hand washing station with anti-bacterial hand soap and plenty of guest towels.
• Gifts are not required at a Sip & See, but guests will most likely bring them—or feel obligated to bring them—anyways. If mom-to-be has already had a regular baby shower prior to the Sip & See, consider adding something tasteful like "The gift of your presence is all that we ask" to the bottom of the invitation, or having the hostess casually mention it when guests RSVP.
• Have a digital camera on hand to take a picture of each guest with the baby, and flat notecards available for them to write a little message to mom. These will come in handy for a scrapbook or memory album later!"

CHANEL LIP GLOSS DRIVES ME CRAZY
OMG, okay, I know this is crazy, but I can't understand why you cannot get the last of the lip gloss out of the Chanel tube?? Why is the applicator made so small you cannot reach the end? I have tried all kinds of things including leaving the tube upside down so the gloss will come down, does not work!
I know there is so many more important things in the world right now, but you know sometimes there is this little thing that just drives you crazy, well this is one for me Yes, the lipgloss is good and would not change the brand, wonder if other glosses are the same!

Every thing is coming up Cozy's!!
Last weekend we were at the farmer's market in South Park, San Diego with a new "crop" of cozy's. Oh yeah, they drew lots of attention and lots of different names. Some babies (OK their mom's) called them lovey's, some woobie's and some just their satin's. Many talked about when their children were small babies they had their special blanket, it was fun to hear the stories, especially if the "kid" was with them! Lizzie's cozy's were designed with the MOM in mind, "grab and go", use in the stroller, the car seat, or just when they need a little something to cozy with. Hey, these make a great shower gift, need a special color or idea for a gift, just ask, maybe we can help. Enjoy your Monday, shoot, looks like it almost over, well enjoy the evening! www.lizziesbaby.com

Spring is here....
Wow, we have had a busy couple of weekends!! First we celebrated Addison Marie's (my niece) second birthday, then it was my nephews (aka baby boy Lopez) baby shower, and of course the La Jolla Farmers Market. Princess Addison enjoyed a Shrek theme party, because in her 2 yr old mind there is nothing better in life than Shrek and Princess Fiona. Baby Boys theme was an All American Sports theme and included a concession stand packed with fun-sweet treats, yummy tailgating food, nacho bar (mmm), bubble gum machines, and ended with delicious Sprinkles cupcakes :-) Now the countdown is on for Baby Boy to make his grand entrance!!
So spring arrived, and Lizzie's Baby has been busy preparing for all our exciting events coming up. We are thrilled to be a part of a new Farmers Market starting this Saturday April 2, it is in South Park and will be held every Saturday from 8-12.......if you are a local San Diegan please stop by and show your support for all the local farmers and crafters, we can't wait!!!! Also, stay tuned for more 411 on what fun Spring boutiques we will be participating in.
I end with yet another preschool story...thought you would enjoy :) A 2 1/2 yr. old boy arrives to my center bright and early at 7:30am, we hadn't seen him for a while and usually he is very quiet when he first arrives. This time was different, he walked in with a huge smile and I knew something was up....his dad said "tell her what you do now," 2 1/2 yr. old replies......"I go pee!!!!" I of course Congratulate him on his new accomplishment. A couple hours later I over hear one teacher say to another "what is that puddle on your floor that the kids are standing in???".....guess our 2 1/2 yr. old doesn't always make it to the toilet....oops :)
Have a fabulous week!!!

Working in a Preschool....
Working in a preschool you hear and see all kinds of interesting things!! Today, in particular, a situation has stuck in my mind and I thought I would share. I was sitting at my desk and I was distracted by the sound of one of our preschool children crying. I decided to take a walk back into the classroom and investigate....I asked the teacher what was wrong and she said she had tried to ask the child several times but he won't tell her. I approached the little boy (3 1/2 yrs.), bent down next to him and asked him what was wrong-he didn't answer, I tried again-no answer. So I then asked him if he was sad, he shook his head NO (still crying), I asked him if he needed a hug, he again shook his head NO. I then noticed he slowly turned and looked behind him and the only thing I saw back there was the tray of snack that had just been brought from the kitchen so I asked him, are you hungry-and sure enough he shook his head yes!! I hurried and cleaned the table, so relieved we had figured out the crying, and I immediately served him up a warm grilled cheese. As I walked back to my desk and sat down I overheard, more than one time, the little boy say "I am so happy", and when the teacher would ask why he responded "because I have a full belly"..........i just sat back and smiled :-) I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes by Shel Silverstein, enjoy.......................
“Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me... Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.”
